McClellan caught in a lie. So?

Think Progress has the goods on White House spokesmonkey Scott McClellan. Now that it's been established that Karl Rove was responsible for leaking CIA agent Valerie Plame's name to the press, will anyone in the White House press corps bother to thump it to him? From September, 2003:

Q All right. Let me just follow up. You said this morning, “The President knows” that Karl Rove wasn’t involved. How does he know that?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, I’ve made it very clear that it was a ridiculous suggestion in the first place. I saw some comments this morning from the person who made that suggestion, backing away from that. And I said it is simply not true. So, I mean, it’s public knowledge. I’ve said that it’s not true.

Crooks and Liars has a roundup of today's White House briefing in which McClellan took some unusually tough questions on the issue of Rove. Not so tough that he couldn't employ his usual spin tactics, but a step in the right direction. For example:

QUESTION: Scott, can I ask you this: Did Karl Rove commit a crime?

MCCLELLAN: Again, David, this is a question relating to a ongoing investigation, and you have my response related to the investigation. And I don't think you should read anything into it other than: We're going to continue not to comment on it while it's ongoing.

Once again, it's become clear that if the nation wants to hear the truth from the White House, it's going to be a non-stop uphill battle. And once again, the White House will count on the mainstream media to turn up a missing white chick or misbehaving celebrity in time to spare them any embarrassment.

By the way, it's funny to note that McClellan managed to use all of his rhetorical dodges in just one response. A) I've already answered that and won't discuss it any more, B) the facts aren't in yet, so I can't say anything, and C) rest assured that we're doing everything we can to get to the bottom of this. Pitiful.

Crooks and Liars, as usual, has the pertinent video, which is wonderful.
