Republicans for closing Gitmo

Gee, wasn't it just a couple of days ago that Rumsfeld laughed off the suggestion that there was talk of closing Guantanamo Bay in Republican circles? Just a couple of days ago that "Falafel" O'Reilly accused Democrats of being part of an anti-American "chorus of hate" that wanted to close that very detention facility?

Of course it was. So who's part of that chorus of hate now? Republican senators Mel "Schiavo Memo" Martinez and Chuck Hagel, plus Representative Duncan Hunter. But don't get too excited-- this is all about keeping up appearances as they look to 2006 elections:

And on CNN's "Late Edition," Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, a member of the Senate's Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees, said that Guantanamo is one reason the United States is "losing the image war" around the world. "It's identifiable with, for right or wrong, a part of America that people in the world believe is a power, an empire that pushes people around, we do it our way, we don't live up to our commitments to multilateral institutions," he said.

The "image war," huh? Spoken like a true member of the CEO presidency.
