I've just learned of a forthcoming documentary that appears to do a great service-- chronicling the decision by a Utah university to grant Michael Moore a speaking opportunity (and subsequently granting movement conservative Sean Hannity an appearance), and the controversy that surrounded the decision. I haven't seen the film, of course, but at the very least, it should provide insight into the debate that perplexes so many liberals today: why the current conservative movement argues against the freedom of speech, an idea that we view to be the cornerstone of American values. On a personal note, I hope to gain some insight into the mindset that makes fascism so appealing to so many Americans, insofar as some citizens favor consorship over open debate.
