20 senators reject anti-lynching resolution

The year? 2005. The issue? The US Senate issuing a formal apology for failing to enact anti-lynching legislation in the legislature. A minimum of 4,725 people were lynched through 1960.

The critics? Some twenty senators who wouldn't approve of the resolution.

Their names? That remains to be seen, but here's an educated guess: southern Republicans afraid to lose the racist vote.

"It's a statement in itself that there aren't 100 co-sponsors," Senator John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, said. "It's a statement in itself that there's not an up-or-down vote."

"Up-or-down-vote"? Where have I been hearing that lately? Hopefully a Democrat will point out the sleaziness of that particular GOP talking point. Follow the above link for a comprehensive overview of the issue.

UPDATE: Here they are-- the 20 Senators who didn't sign.

Lamar Alexander, Robert Bennett, Christopher Bond, Jim Bunning, Conrad Burns, Saxby Chambliss, Thad Cochran, John Cornyn, Michael Crapo, Michael Enzi, Chuck Grassley, Judd Gregg, Orrin Hatch, Trent Lott, Lisa Murkowski, Richard Shelby, John Sununu , Craig Thomas, George Voinovich

. . . .and last but not least, one Democrat:
Kent Conrad of North Dakota.

UPDATE: Kent Conrad has added his name to the resolution, leaving only Republicans on the list of shame.
