Radio Interview with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin
Right click on the link above to download an mp3 file of today's interview with Mayor Nagin from Louisiana radio station WWL. The response has been strictly partisan, but when I heard it, all I heard was two men-- grief-stricken over the disaster that's struck the Gulf coast-- expressing their impotent rage as they saw the footage of people dying in the streets.
Could Nagin have done more? Perhaps, but my initial inclination is to say no, given that he was the mayor of one city in one of the poorest states in the nation. But he should be acknowledged for the genuine grief he expresses on behalf of his consituents. And his interviewer should be recognized for his humane nature. It's vulgar of me to even mention that radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh continue to blame "libs" (his term) for what happened along the Gulf coast-- because in doing so I am politicizing this week's disaster-- but it's also unconscionable for people like him to do anything but use their representation and influence to do anything but try and save the lives of fellow citizens right now. And speaking of politicizing the disaster, Michelle Malkin actually managed to blame Bill Clinton for what happened. It had to happen, but I added that just in case you were wondering who would be the first to blame a man who's been out of office for four years and eight months.
