At the risk of politicizing the hurricane disaster....
Several prominent Republicans (including Newt Gingrich) are urging the administration to commission retired New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani with the command of hurricane relief efforts. He also happens to be a potential candidate for the presidency in 2008.
It's the sort of suggestion that elicits cheers from party loyalists-- and once again puts 9/11 in the spotlight. But what in the world does Giuliani know about Gulf coast infrastructure, communications, or capabilities? Not a thing, of course. But wouldn't he look grand in front of the cameras, all but requiring journalists to remind the public of his inspired speeches in 2001?
To the credit of NY representative John Sweeney (R), he also suggests that two retired generals are put in charge. Now that's not a moronic idea. I'd much prefer a general, trained in logistics under fire, to the current head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Mike Brown, whose pre-Katrina career was working as an estate planning lawyer.
