Let's talk Hackett
Ohio's special election is tomorrow, and it's been the talk of the liberal blogs for weeks. I've barely mentioned it, and should have been doing more. I did contribute to Democrat David Hackett's campaign, and he's doing remarkably well in a very, very red district (running almost even). He's also a Marine who served in Iraq-- in hotspots like Fallujah, no less, although he was not primarily a combatant. He's handsome, very well-spoken, sensible, and straightforward. He also has no history in politics.
His opponent, Republican Jean Schmidt, is an avatar of everything that's wrong with the Republican party these days. She has a history with the men at the center of Coingate-- Governor Taft and Bush fund-raiser/state coffer looter Tom Noe-- and denies ever having heard of Noe(!) just two days before the election. (keep in mind that Coingate has been big, big news in Ohio) When she speaks, all she does is endlessly repeat GOP talking points. For example, no matter what Hackett says, he "sounds just like the Washington liberals." Bush has her unequivocal support. Perhaps worst of all, she dresses like what people in Texas, at least, used to call a 'bowhead.' A prissy girl who gets all dolled up (often in pink) just to go pick up some milk, always has a huge bow in her hair (natch), and is a complete phony. Schmidt has all of that down, but she's a severe-looking wrinkly late-middle ager, and the look is embarrassingly inappropriate.

It's awfully late, but if you haven't given anything to the campaign, why not send a few last-minute dollars to support Hackett. Here's an address.
Normally I wouldn't get all worked up over a race in which I have no personal stake. but this is a great-- and very real-- chance for us to start getting the media to stop parroting the red state/blue state myth. This administration is flailing, and the public is beginning to turn against them. The national security/terror alert strategy that worked for Bush in last year's election isn't paying off now that his failures are so clear. They're finally being put on the spot for their misdeeds with Rovegate. They're pushing a massively unpopular agenda, with CAFTA, privatization and overturning Roe all opposed by a significant majority of the public.
The election of Hackett could prove to be not only good for Ohio, but for the nation in terms of signalling the beginning of the end of neo-facist rule.
