Nobody loves Gonzales
This odd piece from the NY Times is ostensibly about the far right's swift and strong opposition to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Only it never gets around to pointing out why they're so opposed. No specifics, anyway. Apparently he's not conservative enough for the people who are out to establish a theocracy.
Democrats would fight fairly hard against the appointment of a (shudder) Justice Gonzales, seeing as how his most prominent work to date has been to protect the administration from facing any responsibility for ordering the torture of people without so much as accusing them of a crime.
One thing is clear-- the theocratic right wing is dead set on cashing in their chips over this issue, and they won't settle for anything less than a judge willing to curtail civil rights, support government-sponsored religion, and of course take control of women's rights.
The best we can hope for is a presidential overreach. If he again succeeds in peddling a right-wing ideologue as a "mainstream" choice, the Dems will probably lose, because we're notorious for lack of organization and they're going to commit to this 100%.
