The first lady keeps it real.... real stupid.
It's sad to note that the Alito hearings fail to make headlines except for the silly tear-jerker moment. But that's media coverage of the news for ya.
The GOP has obviously decided that the crying game is the story to run with, and the wife of Fearless Leader, who once killed a guy in her car and faced no charges (take THAT, Ted Kennedy!) is committing a blessedly rare act of political opportunism by going all Oprah-ish on the issue.
Q Do you ever feel like crying when you hear the President being criticized, called a liar, being abused?
MRS. BUSH: Well, no, not really. But I will say I called Martha Alito yesterday to tell her to hang in there. I do think it's really important in the United States for people like Judge Alito to be treated with respect. I think it's very important for the Senate to have a very civil and respectful hearing for anyone that has been nominated for the Supreme Court or for the other jobs that require Senate confirmation.
But on the other hand, my family has been in politics for a long time and I think you do develop a thick skin. Does it ever not hurt? You know, not really.
Psssstt-- the password is...."respect." It's the United States, after all, as she helpfully points out. Opposition is un-American. Although I have yet to hear a conservative demonstrate some way in which the Democrats dealt with Alito unfairly. One thing I've heard plenty of is --get this-- "Chappaquiddick!" But now that a prominent Republican responsible for killing another person with a vehicle is involved, that shouldn't be an issue. Right? (Crickets.)
