Bush on Good Morning America

I'll try to find a transcript, but I've heard a few clips, and it's astonishing. The man's utter detachment from reality shines through clearly. Not unlike his speech yesterday, his attempts to sound compassionate were flat and emotionless. He offered nothing but bromides and swagger. Some quotes:

"I think we should have a zero tolerance policy. . ." Upon being asked what should be done about "looters" trying to gather food, water and shoes.

"I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees." This in spite of years of warnings and pleas from scientists and Louisiana officials. This is so obviously false that it sits at the top of the heap of this administration's notorious public statements, right next to Condi's "Bin Laden determined to strike in US" episode. It's either a lie or incompetence-- it's that simple.

"There's no doubt in my mind that New Orleans will rise again as a great city."

This is what we get in the face of the worst natural disaster in our history? New Orleans has descended into lawlessness and savagery. Some 60,000 people wait by the Superdome to be evacuated. Roving bands of armed men wander the streets and hinder rescue efforts. There is no water, no plumbing, no electricity, no food, no shelter. State officials admit that they aren't even counting or collecting the corpses-- just "shoving them aside" because they have too much to deal with. That this is happening on American soil is an absolute disgrace. It is an inexcusable failure of the federal government, and an administration more eager to avoid blame than take action.
