The last nail in Lieberman's coffin (or, Promotion Time!)
While the apologists for the Washington establishment still laud Lieberman as a sterling example of what a Democrat should be today, he's apparently still open to Bush's plan to "fix" Social Security by incurring several trillion dollars in national debt-- and cutting benefits. Now, in 2002, he was quoted as saying: "Simply put, Social Security privatization would take away the safety from the safety net, and turn the idea of a rainy day fund into a sink or swim proposition." The Democratic party isn't the place for moralists who are still willing to screw the working poor. That'd be sort of like, say, an Orthodox Jew with a taste for yummy bacon double cheeseburgers.
Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo has been working overtime on the SocSec issue, and is doing a masterful job. It's a sad thing to see just how many on Capitol Hill are willing to base their "principled stances" on the latest poll numbers.
