Not-so-happy New Year
This comes from Air America's website. After worldwide (including domestic) criticism of the admin's paltry offer of humanitarian aid-- $35 million-- they've decided to give an amount that actually makes a difference.
Note: We're spending about $180 million each day in Iraq.
"The tardiness of the Bush administration is, not surprisingly, reflected in the moral values people on the Christian right. Bill Berkowitz of Working For Change writes that as of yesterday the big evangelical organizations like the American Family Association, the Family Research Council, the Christian Coalition, and Focus on the Family "were not soliciting aid for the victims of the earthquake/tsunami. In fact, there is no mention of the giant earthquake and tsunami that devastated southern Asia." As in so much else with this President, a good grounding in evangelical theology seems to be a pre-requisite in understanding policy issues."
There you have it. British citizens have ponied up $60 million. The "Left Behind" crowd has collected zero. And of course, it took W four days to even address the issue (it only took a few hours to attack Clinton for making a statement on the crisis). Congratulations, you scumbag.
One more thought: You lead a country that has become the scourge of a major world religion. Some members of that religion are motivated enough to attack your nation's civilians. Then the most populous nation inhabited by citizens of that religion is struck by the worst natural disaster in its history. What do you, savvy politician that you are, do in response?
A) Make an immediate statement expressing your concern and support, and do everything you can to demonstrate your compassion and goodwill.
B) Wait four days to make any statement at all and offer a paltry amount of aid, thereby further enraging the world-- including members of that particular religion.
