George Allen enjoys him some ham

Although the story has been snowballing all week, I haven't written about it yet. The short version: George Allen is asked about his Jewish heritage. He almost makes a smart move by claiming it's irrelevant to the election. Which it is. But he also treats it like an insult, referring to the questions as 'aspersions.' Then he acknowledges a Jewish ancestor or two, while claiming that he still "enjoys a ham sandwich." Which comes across like an 'I can't help it, but I'm not tainted' defense.

Now it's turned, predictably, into a story of the 'liberal media' sending out the goon squad to demolish the career of a wholesome GOP luminary (who just happens to have a long and troubling history of flirting with racists). And right-wing pundits are throwing around the same old lines in an attempt to claim that they're the victims, and it's actually the guys who didn't make the ham sandwich/aspersion remarks who are the virulent anti-Semites. All pretty typical, but worth a look. I guess.
