Bizarroworld Dispatch: Hastert on taxes

Last night on the House floor, Speaker Dennis Hastert said the following: Well, folks, if you earn $40,000 a year and have a family of two children, you don’t pay any taxes. So you probably, if you don’t pay any taxes, you are not going to get a very big tax cut.

This takes me back to the GOP push for capital gains tax cuts, particularly on dividends. The argument was that the system was inherently unfair, because it was "double taxation." 75% of stocks might be held by some 5-10% of the country, but dagnabit-- it's the principle of the thing!

Sadly, regressive taxation like payroll and sales tax not only don't count, but aren't even taxes.
