Bring me the head of Donald Rumsfeld

There have been calls for Rummy's resignation throughout this administration. Each time it appears that he'll have to be the patsy for the bungling of the Iraq war, however, that ol' Bush loyalty carries the day.

There are still plenty of calls for Rumsfeld to step down, but the tone is changing and it's coming from all quarters. I'm increasingly hearing accusation that the poor guy's just losing his marbles. From some of his bizarre appearances in public of late-- from not being aware of highly-publicized events to strange wordsmithing of military terms-- I'm starting to wonder if some of those grumblings might not have some truth to them. Granted, the article I'm linking to is written with plenty of snark, but you'll get the picture.

Don got so nutty during his weekly news conference last week that Joint Chiefs head, General Pace, had to reel him in; not once, but twice. The first time was when Pace used the accepted term, "insurgents," to describe the indigenous fighters in Iraq.

Rumsfeld interrupted, waving both hands over his head, to announce that over the weekend he had had an epiphany. We've been using the wrong term entirely to describe the Iraqis killing our troops over there, he pronounced from on high. They are not "insurgents," they are "Enemies of the Legally Elected Iraqi Government," or EOLEIGs.

Is that really how he spends his weekends? I should also add the gossip that Lieberman is being talked of as a candidate for succession, although I'm skeptical. It might be politically savvy, but it would be the first time ideology was trumped in the last five years. And they likes the ideology, they do.
