Iraq + Iran, TLF
This is bad, bad news. On so many levels.
1. Since I started blogging last October, I've been writing about my (admittedly Machiavellian) concerns that the Iraq invasion would have one seriously troubling result that is never addressed-- the lone secular government in the Middle East would be plunged into chaos, even as fundamentalist regimes continued to consolidate power and stoke the flames of zealotry among their citizenry. And the White House maintains its close ties to the Saudi ruling family, even though they're responsible for promoting fanatical Islam.
2. Two traditional enemies are now uniting against a perceived common enemy-- the United States.
3. This puts the administration just one step closer to expanding their war. After blowing it in Afghanistan, blowing it in Iraq, and presiding over a huge increase in terrorist incidents while cutting funding for port security and protection of potential terrorist targets in the US (e.g., nuclear, chemical sites), they are now closer to continuing on their disastrous course by expanding the war with an army that is already short of troops, short of equipment, and short of money.
