Bush's inept China speech

I'm no expert on China, but I'm not an imbecile either. And I could have told Bush to strike a few passages from his unfortunate speech in Tokyo.

A savvy jr. high student could tell you that Taiwan is a sore spot with Chinese officials, who've engaged in regular saber-rattling over the "rogue province." So what does Fearless Leader say? They're a model of democracy and freedom. Good one.

Then there's that whole sticky wicket of Western imperialism, which hasn't really sat too well with China since colonization, the Opium Wars and those hundred-year leases. Not to mention their troubles with Falun Gong. So what does bonehead do? Throws a sop to the religious right by encouraging China to ramp up their Bible and church industries. That should go over well.

The American press is already noting that the talk isn't going to go over well in Beijing-- and preceded Bush's visit by just a few days:

Piquing China just days before meetings with its leaders, President Bush on Wednesday held up the self-governing island of Taiwan that Beijing claims as its own as a model of freedom "at all levels" that the communist giant should emulate.

What's with this administration? Have they jut thrown up their hands and decided to let the most carefully stage managed president in history just bungle and stammer his way through the rest of his performance?
